10 Movie Cliches That Need To Stop
7. Nobody Pays For Drinks In Bars Again, this is a nitpick much like the whole "people never eating" thing, but when was the last time you actually saw a character pay for a drink in a movie? Characters will walk up to the bar, ask for "a beer" or something equally generic so as not to be giving anything free product placement, only for the bartender to almost immediately slam the drink down as the scene takes place, but rarely do we actually see a character give any cash to the bartender, nor the bartender ever state the cost of the drink. While it's feasible that a few of cinema's elite characters - Gordon Gecko, Brandon from Shame - might have tabs that they'll clear out off-screen, the absurd lack of this simple moment we all do multiple times at the weekend is ridiculous. Again, why not just start the scene with people already having a drink in hand? It's a daft idiosyncrasy that proves more distracting than filmmakers like to think.
