10 Movie Crazes You Forgot Were A Thing
4. P.O.V.
In Point of View shooting we see the world through the main character of a scene's eyes and are treated to an immediacy that is both enthralling and discombobulating.
James Cameron's Terminator (1984) took advantage of the style, notably shooting many of Arnold Schwarzenegger's scenes through the vantage point of the cyborg. As did, Steven Spielberg in his tragic swimmer's view of being circled by his underwater beast in Jaws (1975). The effect can also be located in the high-octane, night vision, arse kicking in Matthew Vaughn's Kick-Ass (2010), dished out by Hit Girl or even from a film five years before that in Andrzej Bartkowiak's take on the video game, Doom.
GoPro style filming hit new peaks with the release of Hardcore Henry (2015), a film almost entirely shot in P.O.V. and while visually the outcome was spectacular, the critics weren't convinced with a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In a society where we are offered the chance to step into another world for a small fee, it looks as though we draw the line at having to spend an entire film in someone else's shoes as not many films have gone back to the well since Henry's exploits.
