Horror movies obviously come with certain expectations about people being killed off. This is, after all, a genre specifically built on the idea of there being nowhere to hide for even the most famous of actors. If they can kill Drew Barrymore in a cold opening, they can do whatever they like, basically.

And yet, that didn't in any way prepare the audience for the death of Charlie in Hereditary. The film's marketing had rather cleverly sidestepped that part of the story, leaving expectations that the only real peril involved would be tied to the supernatural. Which is pretty much the opposite of a little girl's head being catastrophically removed in a collision with a telephone pole.

This was the same girl whose face was plastered all over the posters and who was supposed to be a lead - talk about smashing expectations against a telephone pole.
