10 Movie Details You Totally Missed The First Time
2. Mr. Bobinsky, Chernobyl Survivor - Coraline
Laika's feature debut Coraline remains one of their most evocative, stylish and emotional films to date, and for proof of its absurd level of detail, look no further than the medal worn by Coraline's (Dakota Fanning) eccentric neighbour Mr. Bobinsky (Ian McShane).
Though the medal is never explained in the movie, it's clear that it means a lot to Bobinsky given that he never removes it from his person.
But a closer inspection combined with some Google Fu reveals that it was actually a medal awarded to the Liquidators brought in to clean up the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
To date, it remains the only medal awarded for participating in the cleanup of a nuclear accident - thank Christ - yet tragically, many of the Liquidators suffered from debilitating physical and mental health issues in the decades following their heroism.
This may well explain a few things about Mr. Bobinsky, namely his blue skin and overall weirdness. But above all else, it's a fascinating piece of character shading that's both totally unnecessary and so easily missed.
