3. The AvP Spear - The Predator

The Easter Egg

Shane Black's The Predator may be a pretty terrible movie, but it's absolutely packed with nods, references and Easter eggs pertaining to the prior films in the series.

Surely the most eyebrow-raising egg in the entire movie is the surprise presence of the spear from Alien vs. Predator, which was crafted from the tail of a Xenomorph and given to Lex (Sanaa Lathan) by the hero Predator ahead of that film's final battle. In Black's movie, the spear is briefly shown to Casey Bracket (Olivia Munn) early on.

Given that AvP was widely-loathed by fans of both franchises, it was rather surprising to see Black kinda-sorta make it canon once again.

The Story

It's no secret that The Predator underwent extensive reshoots last spring following disastrous test screenings, with the bulk of the film's third act being re-conceived.

In slightly less urgent fashion, Black also endeavoured to include more crowd-pleasing Easter eggs, and only then, some nine months after principal photography wrapped and test audiences had torn it to shreds, was the AvP gag shot and included.

Because if anything would improve the test audience scores, it's reminding them of that catastrophe, right?
