10 Movie Endings That Left You Speechless
1. Enemy
Denis Villeneuve's unforgettable 2013 psychological drama Enemy stars Jake Gyllenhaal as college professor Adam Bell, who discovers that he has a doppelganger by the name of Anthony Claire - an actor who looks exactly like him.
This revelation takes Adam on a deeply bizarre journey that concludes with Anthony dying in a car accident with Adam's wife Mary (Mélanie Laurent), while Adam effectively assumes Anthony's identity and relationship with his wife, Helen (Sarah Gadon).
In the film's final scene, Adam plans to head to an underground sex club frequented by Anthony, and tells Helen that he's going out.
However, as Adam walks into the bedroom, Helen has been inexplicably replaced by a gigantic, wall-sized tarantula which recoils upon seeing him.
Adam then stares with bizarre disinterest at the tarantula, and that's all she wrote.
Now, there are many, many different interpretations of this ending's meaning - perhaps most popularly that the spider represents a fear of romantic commitment - but regardless of which you subscribe to, the sheer breathtaking visceral power of that surprise spider speaks for itself.
Whether you're an arachnophobe or not, it's a visual designed to trigger the most primal part of your lizard brain, to be shocked and lost for words. In that regard it's certainly incredibly effective.
