6. An Energy Magnate Amasses Even More Power - Inception

Con Air Steve Buscemi
Warner Bros.

Inception's cathartic finale sees Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) successfully implanting an idea in the mind of Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy), to dissolve his father's (Pete Postlethwaite) energy company, Fischer Morrow.

The mission was organised at the behest of Saito (Ken Watanabe), the head of Fischer Morrow's rival Proclus Global, who in exchange for his competition being wiped out would use his power to have Cobb's criminal record wiped clean and allow him to return to the United States.

On the surface it's a happy ending which sees Cobb reunited with his family - unless you subscribe to the theory he's still dreaming, of course - but the real kicker is that we've essentially witnessed an already extremely powerful man amass an even greater amount of power.

With his one rival dismantled, Saito is a presumably unstoppable energy magnate, and given his noted ability to get criminals off the hook at the drop of a hat, it's easy to believe he'll use his influence for more nefarious than benevolent means in the future.

Cobb effectively handed him an energy monopoly, and as history will dictate, giving already-powerful men monopolies over anything is a uniformly terrible idea.
