Okay, so Blade Runner director Ridley Scott’s long-awaited return to the sci-fi genre, Prometheus, wasn’t perfect.

Released in 2012, the critically maligned prequel to his 1979 classic Alien was accused of overcomplicating the original film’s brutal simplicity with ambitious world building and backstory. The cluttered storytelling did no doubt cost the film some of its potential effectiveness as a tense horror.

But at least the added complexity managed to confirm a theory which fans had long held true about the series’ monstrous antagonist the Xenomorph.

Namely, the film confirms the idea that the alien is too dangerous to have been a natural product of evolution, and thus must have been intentionally engineered as a bioweapon.

As Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken hilariously pointed out, an acid blooded monster is as much a threat to itself as anything else and wouldn’t actually be perfectly adapted to any ecosystem. But it’s very believable as a bioweapon, which Prometheus confirms was created by the Engineers, a race of giant white spaceman almost as threatening and terrifying as the xenomorph itself.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
