10 Movie Fight Scenes That Set The Bar For Slo-Mo
6. The Magneto Heist - X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014)
The Scene
A Kitchen. Charles (James McAvoy), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and newcomer Quicksilver (Evan Peters) have sprung Magneto (Michael Fassbender) from his magnetically challenged holding and now face an impending assault by that of a kitchen full of armed security.
How It Sets The Bar
What makes this scene so visually astounding is its establishing of the variables within it. Wolverine's claws gradually pierce through his skin whilst Magneto attempts a distraction, lifting cutlery into the air. All punctured by Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle.
Bryan Singer cuts through the oncoming shredding, that we have become so accustomed to in the X-Men Universe, by allowing Quicksilver to suit up and go for a jog. At his hyper-speed the rest of the room is rendered near stationary but the ultra-slo-mo used here gives him the chance to both assist the X-Men and taste the delights of a levitating pot of stew.
The effect itself is stunning, with Peter's hair revurberating like a Bose speaker and his skin pressing back into his skull to show the might of the pace we're dealing with here. His adjustment of bullets, faces and the dealing out of wedgies manage to showcase the intelligence of the mutant whilst using the all important camera tool to lean into his comedic chops (that spend most of this scene flapping).
