The Franchise: Seth MacFarlane's 2012 comedy about a man (Mark Wahlberg) and the teddy bear (MacFarlane) he brought to life as a child was a gigantic hit, making $549.4 million worldwide (more than ten-fold its budget) and enjoying solid critical acclaim. Unsurprisingly, that sort of success immediately initiated talk of a sequel, and by 2015, Ted 2 was released, along with plans already announced for Ted 3. How It Died: Now, Ted 2 wasn't a huge bomb like some might have you believe, but it was a major financial disappointment all the same, grossing "just" $213.7 million against its $68 million budget. Studios expect sequels to make more money, not less (for instance, The Hangover Part II made almost $120 million more than the original), and so to see Ted 2 make less than 40% of what the original did (and get more mixed reviews) put the brakes on all sequel plans, effectively killing the franchise. Granted, two movies was arguably already one too many, but with the prospect of a third film being possibly even more financially embarrassing, it's just not happening.
