The Franchise: This planned four-part adaptation of Veronica Roth's young adult sci-fi series was supposed to be the next Hunger Games, though without the strong reviews or dynamite box office to measure up, it always ended up feeling like a pale imitation. Still, by 2016, three of the four movies had hit screens, with the finale, Ascendant, due for release next year.

How It Died: This year's Allegiant was a major box office disappointment, pulling in more than $100 million less than the prior movies, which were already fairly modest successes at best.

Lionsgate then changed plans for Ascendant, opting to lower the budget and release it as a TV movie without even notifying the cast, who mostly doubted they would be involved with it.

As a result, the final movie is essentially in limbo and will almost certainly never get made, while Lionsgate are reportedly also exploring the possibility of a spin-off TV show. Just leave its corpse alone already.

Which movie franchises were you most happy to see die this year? Shout them out in the comments!
