10 Movie Franchises That Ruined Iconic Characters Twice
4. Boba Fett - Star Wars
The First Time
Though Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch) has a rather small role in the original Star Wars trilogy, it's fair to say that he certainly made the most of his screen time, and between his awesome design and badass voice, it's easy to see why he quickly became a cult fave.
So fans were left fuming, then, when the character was unceremoniously killed off in spectacularly dopey fashion in Return of the Jedi, having his rocket pack accidentally ignited by a clumsy Han Solo (Harrison Ford), sending him flying into a wall and into the mouth of a waiting Sarlacc.
Though the Expanded Universe did eventually ret-con Fett's survival, in purely cinematic terms it remains a flabbergasting squandering of an incredible character.
The Second Time
Boba Fett re-appears in the prequel Attack of the Clones as a young boy (Daniel Logan), where it's revealed that he's actually a clone of the bounty hunter Jango Fett (Temuera Morrison), who raises him as his son.
Fans subsequently get to witness a pivotal moment in the boy's life, as he watches his "father" be decapitated by Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) during the Battle of Geonosis.
And yet, all of this felt like nothing more than forced fan service that robbed the character of his compelling mystique in the original trilogy, even accepting his disappointingly daft death.
Sometimes it's better to keep the audience in the dark, and that was definitely true in this case.
