10 Movie Franchises That Set The Bar Too High For Themselves

3. Predator

Jurassic Park
20th Century Fox

Skinning their prey and boasting an armoury which was both undeniably cool and legitimately creepy, 1987's titular Predator caused quite the fuss when it first ripped onto the scene.

Though some, like Elvis Mitchell of The New York Times, claimed that the film was 'grisly and dull, with few surprises', the film still managed to find an audience and is still revered as one of the greatest sci-fi/horror mash-ups of all time.

Coming into its own when the beast and an in-form Arnold Schwarzenegger as Dutch are forced to square off in the climax of the picture, it appeared that the film had the potential for a follow up later down the line.

Three years later, the alien creature returned to hunt down new foes in Los Angeles and the results were fun, but the flick was no where near as captivating as the jungle brutality we'd witnessed a few years earlier.

Over the years, various attempts to recapture the initial glory/terror of the Predator have all fallen a little flat. Alien Vs Predator (2004) and the subsequent AVP: Requiem (2007) flattered to deceive. While Predators (2010) and The Predator (2018) both had their moments, but are still seen as largely inferior to that of the original human shredding alien monster slasher of the late 80's.
