10 Movie Franchises That Should Die With Their Stars
5. Pirates Of The Caribbean - Johnny Depp

One of the most bizarre yet deserved Oscar nominations even cinephiles forget is Johnny Depp’s second best actor nomination for Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. It’s absolutely earned, though doesn’t fit the typical mold of an Oscar worthy performance. Depp (along with Geoffrey Rush) has appeared in all five Pirates films and has consistently been the face of the franchise. Gore Verbinski directed the first in the saga 16 years ago, based off the popular Disney Park’s ride.
The last two films, On Stranger Tides and Dead Man Tells No Tales, had middling to negative reviews and saw a steep decline in US box office success; the US is just one territory, though. The films performed just as planned overseas and made nearly four times its budget back.
As of right now, a Pirates
of the Caribbean 6 is currently in limbo. There was talk of rebooting the
franchise to try to distance themselves from Johnny Depp’s questionable behaviour
and falling star-power, but nothing has yet to be firmly announced.
