10 Movie Franchises That Were Rebooted Multiple Times
1. Terminator
As much as each new sequel would like us to, it's impossible to ignore the multiple failed reboots that have befallen the Terminator franchise.
While both The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day are rightfully considered among the greatest films of all time, everything that came after James Cameron's departure from the franchise just couldn't compare.
2003's terribly underrated Terminator 3: Rise of The Machines did well enough at the box office to warrant another sequel, but its slight underperformance and Arnold Schwarzenegger's political career put the saga's future on hold. Then the reboots started.
The Christian Bale-headlined Terminator Salvation hit theatres in 2009, promising to kickstart a new trilogy only to receive negative reviews and disappoint at the box office. All talks of a sequel were dropped and the franchise remained dormant until it was completely rebooted by Skydance in 2015.
With Arnold back in the lead role and what looked to be a fresh new story, Genisys should have been a major success. Unfortunately, critics hated the convoluted plot and the film only grossed a woeful $89 million domestically. Again, another planned trilogy (and TV series) was dropped.
Despite all that, the series will receive another reboot later this year when Terminator: Dark Fate hits the big screen. With James Cameron finally back (as producer), and both Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton returning, T6 will be a direct sequel to T2 - so maybe this will be the reboot that finally brings The Terminator back to life.
