10 Movie Henchmen Who Stole Movies From Villains
4. Bob - Batman (1989)
You'll have to forgive me for a slight bit of hyperbole in this case, as while Tracey Walter's Bob is maybe in with a shot of being the greatest onscreen henchman ever, there's not a chance in hell anyone is stealing a movie away from Jack Nicholson, who of course played the Joker in Tim Burton's majestic adaptation of Batman from 1989.
Even so, that shouldn't preclude Bob from getting his flowers (so long as said flowers don't spew toxic Joker gas his way), because himself and his fellow boys are impossible not to love.
Their former boss, Jack Napier, takes a tumble into some nasty chemicals and emerges with a clown-themed rebrand and a deranged plan to make his way to the big time involving branded merchandise and the threat of mass poisonings. Do these hard-nosed, hardboiled mobsters react incredulously? Nope! After icing Jack Palance's Carl Grissom, they commit to the bit wholeheartedly, making Joker-themed jackets, dressing up for various schemes and even giving their individual criminal personalities a full circus refit. Like, just look at them during the "Party Man" sequence at the art gallery. Do not tell me these aren't guys who love their job and their boss.
At the front of Joker's rank-and-file is Bob himself, a pal, colleague, and Joker's "number one guy" who is clearly just interested in supporting his buddy as he finds a new way of expressing himself creatively. He may seem a little bewildered at times, but looking at Bob, you can just tell he's one of those ride-or-die amigos who'd follow you to hell and back, which of course makes it all the more heartbreaking that he's the first person Joker takes his anger out on when things start going awry at his parade.
Poor Bob. Gone, but most certainly not forgotten.
