10 Movie Mistakes That Became Canon
2. Lando Mispronounces Han's Name - Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
For literally more than 40 years at this point, Star Wars fans have wondered why Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) just can't seem to pronounce his uneasy pal Han Solo's (Harrison Ford) name correctly.
In The Empire Strikes Back, Lando pronounces "Han" as if to rhyme with "can," no matter that Han himself pronounces it to rhyme with "none."
Many simply pawned it off as Billy Dee Williams offering up his own eccentric interpretation of the name, and because Empire was directed by Irvin Kershner rather than George Lucas, there perhaps wasn't the same impetus to correct it.
But near four decades on, fans had the pronunciation error fully canonised in Solo: A Star Wars Story. In the prequel, Han (Alden Ehrenreich) and Lando (Donald Glover) meet for the first time during a game of Sabacc, where Lando mocks Han's incorrect pronunciation of the name.
But moments later, Lando gets Han's name wrong, indeed calling him Han like "can," no matter that Han attempts to correct him otherwise.
It's a cute little moment that demonstrates the origin of Lando's weird pronunciation and his ongoing refusal to say it right - either out of sheer arrogance or to mess with Han, if not a little bit of both.
