10 Movie Moments That Pissed Off The Fanboys In 2014

8. Tauriel (Again)

If anyone was going to be allowed to mess with Tolkien's vision for Middle Earth - or at least "reinterpret" it in a way that made it more viable as a movie adaptation - it was probably always going to be Peter Jackson. The director is a dyed-in-the-wool fan, an expert through not only proximity but also because he has consciously drenched himself in the lore and the mystique of the fantasy world, and he didn't do too bad a job adapting the Lord Of The Rings. So when it came time to develop The Hobbit - a sparse, childish book in comparison to its elder sibling - Jackson's expertise and creative vision were welcomed: even the idea of bringing in new characters and new story-threads wasn't that much of a problem (probably because even ardent fans would concede The Hobbit actually needed it). The problem was, Jackson brought in his new characters (or extended the presence of bit-part players) but then got a bit distracted and sort of just forgot about them, so by the end of the trilogy they were relegated to passengers. That was particularly true of Tauriel, who went from Orc-ass-kicking action heroine to misty-eyed love interest who did very little other than watch things happen to other people. She wasn't a bad introduction, even though fans initially responded somewhat poorly, but the final insult that she was under-used (and thus inherently superfluous) was enough to inspire rage in even reasonable minds.
