Whatever your take on Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, there's no denying that Austin Butler gives a phenomenally transformative performance in the role - one that rightly netted him a Best Actor Oscar nomination.

Butler lost himself enough in the part that he even struggled to stop talking like The King once shooting wrapped, but beyond that, one tragic aspect of Presley's history was shared by the actor himself.

Elvis sadly lost his doting mother Gladys (Helen Thomson) when he was just 23 years old - a loss shared by Butler himself, whose own mother Lori passed away from cancer when he was also 23 years of age.

In an interview with TODAY, Butler said that discovering this unfortunate shared connection nevertheless helped him tap into who Elvis was. He said:

"When I learned about his mom - and then knowing that we were the exact same age - that just hit me... It was just one of those things where you know the stars are aligning and that just became the most personal thing."
