10 Movie Moments That Look Like CGI But Aren't
4. Catching The Tray - Spiderman
For those who grew up with them, there's something undeniably special about the original Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy. The performances, action sequences and characters were all great fun, however what really brought it all together the best was just how cheesy it could all get with Toby Maguire taking on the role of Peter Parker.
Garfield brought his own spin, Holland is obviously great, but there's something just so cringeworthy about Maguire's crotch-fest dance moves or 'oh boy, yeah' deliveries that makes this version of Parker feel like the best representation of the most hapless young adult in New York, all of which make his triumphant moments all the more rewarding to an audience by the way.
One of the earliest examples of these triumphant moments is during the first film in Peter's high school cafeteria. Mary Jane is passing by when she slips and launches her lunch tray into the air; innately, Peter gets to his feet, catches MJ, and manages to stack every single part of his future partner's lunch back on the tray.
To most, this whole sequence looked like some early 2000s CGI being pushed to the limit, however the whole thing was actually all done practically. A special glue was used to keep things in place, but it apparently took Toby Maguire a hundred and fifty six takes before finally channelling his inner Spidey and nailing the shot.
