6. Hexxus - FernGully

FernGully brilliantly introduced kids to the dangers of pollution and the importance of saving the environment - the method of awareness that they used was successful because it blended fairies and talking bats with complete and utter terror. All things that kids can't get enough of, right? Hexxus is the villain and is literally a personification of pollution, feeding off of slime and gaining power from the destruction of the rainforest and its inhabitants. Hexxus' appearance fluctuates between a terrifying skeleton dripping in brown sludge and a smokey demon-like persona. As a kid, this was pretty awful and nightmare-inducing, because he was coming for your tree house and any fairies or comedic bats that may live there. It's easy now to fully recognise the brilliance that is Tim Curry (who voiced Hexxus) and just appreciate the amazingly flamboyant character for what he really is: a Broadway superstar.
