10 Movie Moments You've Always Misunderstood
5. Peter's Dancing Is Intentionally Corny - Spider-Man 3
What Everybody Thinks
After Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) becomes infected with an extraterrestrial symbiote, his undergoes a personality transplant of sorts, taking on a more self-confident and arrogant persona, complete with an emo haircut and, er, the desire to flaunt his dance "skills" as much as possible.
These sequences are prime cinematic cringe, no question, yet according to many fans this was also a toe-curlingly awful bout of unintentional comedy.
The Truth
Remember that the original Spider-Man trilogy was directed by cheese maestro Sam Raimi: the guy made his career being corny and over-the-top, and there's absolutely no way that Peter's embarrassing actions are anything but intentional.
From the reactions of the other actors, it's abundantly clear that Peter isn't doing something cool: he's doing something he thinks is cool.
It's totally fine not to like the scene, of course, but to call it a Tommy Wiseau-level feat of accidental comedy is totally disingenuous.
