10 Movie Performances Way Better Than They Had Any Right To Be
6. Adam Sandler - The Meyerowitz Stories
Why It Shouldn't Have Worked
The words Adam Sandler and Netflix haven't exactly combined to inspiring results so far and unfortunately, for all of his flashes of brilliance in the likes of Punch Drunk Love, Funny People and Reign Over Me, his career has been increasingly defined by dross like The Ridiculous Six and The Do-Over. It's what his fans like, if the box office returns when he's actually good are anything to go by.
So, even with the sometimes great Noah Baumbach, the sometimes great Dustin Hoffman and the sometimes great Ben Stiller involved, any Sandler project has to be considered in the wider context of his other work. And what he does for Netflix specifically, when it's released that way.
But Then...
Just as he has several times in the past, when Sandler was faced with material that didn't allow him to mug or do that insufferable man-child voice he seems to love, he was forced to do some real performing. And he's great, proving once more just how f*cking frustrating it is that he spends most of his time making garbage.
