10 Movie Re-Castings That Ruined Iconic Characters
4. Kyle Reese - Terminator Genisys
Original - Michael Biehn
Recast - Jai Courtney
Kyle Reese is a soldier from the future who time-travels into the past to battle a robotic killing machine called a Terminator. Even though he's written like a generic hero, Michael Biehn portrayed him with such conviction and depth, he's become one of the most iconic heroes in sci-fi.
Although Kyle is mostly absent through the film series, he plays an integral role in the fourth sequel, Terminator: Genisys. Sadly, fans felt their hearts sink when they learned Kyle Reese was played by Jai Courtney. Even though the Aussie actor is talented, he seems to only come to life while portraying an over-the-top character like Boomerang in Suicide Squad or Varro in Spartacus. But when he has to, y'know, act like a human being, he's more wooden than... wood.
Even though his co-star, Emilia Clarke, got flack for overacting, at least she was trying. Jai Courtney is so one-note, he somehow made a time-travelling soldier come across as boring. Because of his underwhelming performance, you can't understand why Sarah Connor would fall for this version of Kyle Reese, how he became a high-ranking soldier, or how he's able to hold his own against a Terminator.
