10 Movie Scenes Everyone Skips
1. Grandma Ruth Dies - Dante's Peak
Dante's Peak isn't a great or even particularly good movie, but there's something about the thrilling escapist schlock of a trashy disaster movie.
However, even die-hard fans of this 1997 volcano-run-amok film don't have much time for the infamous sequence in which grandma Ruth (Elizabeth Hoffman) effectively kills herself.
Harry (Pierce Brosnan), Rachel (Linda Hamilton), and Rachel's children end up attempting to rescue Ruth by crossing a lake on a motorboat, but as they approach dry land, the lake has turned acidic and eaten away at the boat's underside.
Ruth then "valiantly" jumps into the acid lake to help push the boat to safety more quickly, the burns causing her death the next morning.
Between the risible acting and utter pointlessness of Ruth sacrificing herself - they were so close to shore! - it all falls completely flat. If you want to avoid five minutes of shouting in frustration at your TV, just scrub right past this sequence.
