Though Ridley Scott's The Martian revolves around a man, Mark Watney (Matt Damon), stranded on Mars and ultimately losing scary amounts of weight, Matt Damon didn't in fact go full Christian Bale and drop all the pounds himself.

According to Damon, the original plan was for him to lose the weight the hard way for the sequences where he had to look emaciated, but this was quickly taken off the table once of the movie's scheduling was worked out.

For the few shots in which Watney has to look dangerously gaunt, a body double was brought in with Damon's face digitally pasted over the top where necessary.

It's pretty much seamless, honestly, beyond the fact that we as audiences probably wouldn't expect a Hollywood A-lister to ditch so much weight for such a brief period of screen time.
