No film in recent memory - perhaps ever, honestly - has been as obsessively speculated about as Avengers: Endgame, and though the film's big time travel conceit was leaked more than a year before release, some of the plot's finer details somehow remained firmly under wraps.

As much as many fans expected Tony Stark to die at the end and Cap (Chris Evans) to maybe return to his original timeline, few could've predicted that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) would become the slovenly, depressed "Bro Thor," or especially that Thanos (Josh Brolin) would actually get killed in the movie's first 20 minutes.

Though the marketing made it clear that Thanos was Endgame's primary antagonist, the Russos pulled an epic bait-and-switch by having the present-day Thanos be decapitated by Thor at the end of the prologue.

The Mad Titan then sits out almost the next hour of the movie, only being reintroduced when a 2014 version of himself learns of The Avengers' time-hopping shenanigans.

Despite past Thanos being shown extensively in the film's trailers, most fans had no inkling that they were actually looking at "another" Thanos, or that the "original" version would be getting a premature dirt nap in one of the film's opening scenes.
