10 Movie Sequels Stuck In Production Hell
1. Twilight Of The Mallrats
To Kevin Smith's credit, he's managed to produce a number of unlikely after-the-fact sequels, namely both Clerks follow-ups and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
But the longest gestating of his many unmade sequels is Mallrats 2 - a follow-up to his 1995 cult classic buddy comedy. After a full 20 years of speculation around the project, Smith confirmed that he'd started writing it in 2015, with the hope of shooting in 2016.
Yet Smith's plans kept shifting around, with Mallrats 2 at one point becoming a 10-episode TV series, until six different networks rejected his pitch.
In January 2020, Smith confirmed that it was now once again a movie, entitled Twilight of the Mallrats, and by April of that year the first draft of the script was completed.
Smith later confirmed that the film would focus on Brodie's (Jason Lee) daughter, Banner (Aparna Brielle), while Shannen Doherty was set to reprise her role from the original movie.
But three years later the needle hasn't moved at all, and though Smith recently expressed optimism on his Fat Man Beyond podcast that Twilight of the Mallrats will finally happen in 2023, it's worth taking that sentiment with a truckload of salt.
Given that Mallrats flopped at the box office almost 30 years ago, it's tough to blame studios and financiers for not wanting to invest in a sequel that's anything but a sure thing.
