10 Movie Sequels Stuck In Production Hell
6. 28 Months Later
Gripping zombie sequel 28 Weeks Later not only made a tidy profit at the box office, but also concluded with a tantalising bit of sequel bait of its own, with the action from the previously Brit-centric series spilling out beyond our island shores and onto the streets of Paris. That, though, was in 2007 and there's been little movement on the project since.
Yes, for all that the 28...Later franchise may have pioneered zombies that were quick on their feet, production on its sequel is going nowhere fast.
Original 28 Days Later writer-director team of Alex Garland and Danny Boyle discussed a desire to make a third film while Weeks was still in production and they were working on their sci-fi Sunshine, but ultimately both went their separate ways onto solo directing projects.
By the 2010s any potential movement on 28 Months Later was held up by a complicated situation in which the disparate set of rights holders were no longer on speaking terms. Nevertheless, following his acclaimed directorial debut Ex Machina, Garland continued to talk about future 28... projects he'd like to work on, mentioning both a possibly 28 Months Later and 28 Years Later, albeit adding that "28 Decades Later is probably taking the piss."
It seems now, however, that there may finally be some progress in bringing rage infected monsters back to our screens. While promoting his new movie Yesterday last summer, Boyle confirmed that 28 Months is in development, although really that could still mean that the wait will be more a matter of years than the titular months.
