When Blade Runner 2049 was first announced, the question on everybody's lips was - will it reveal the truth about the original film's protagonist, Deckard (Harrison Ford)?

After all, the agonising mystery over Deckard's true identity - whether he's a replicant or a human - has plagued fans for literally decades, and it seemed basically inevitable that the sequel would finally explain it one way or another.

But instead, director Denis Villeneuve opted not to confirm Deckard's status one way or another, refusing to even consider the question within the movie itself and instead allowing the enigma to endure.

Given that Blade Runner director Ridley Scott and Harrison Ford have famously argued over whether Deckard is a replicant or not - Scott says yes, Ford says no - effectively ignoring the question, and perhaps tacitly suggesting it doesn't even matter, was absolutely the right way to go.

Generally speaking, it's better to let a mythologised mystery live on forever more rather than de-mystify it, especially considering the backlash confirming it either way would cause.
