10 Movie Sequels That Completely Flipped The Original

7. Ouija 2 Replaces A Teen Slasher With A Period Piece Family Drama

We’ve all fallen in love with Mike Flanagan since his early forays into horror filmmaking, and everyone likes to note they knew of the helmer as far back as 2011’s Lovecraftian indie Absentia now that he’s at the helm of everything from Netflix’s megahit The Haunting of Hill House to the big budget Shining sequel Doctor Sleep. However, few would call the director’s instalment of the Ouija franchise one of his finest hours, despite the film’s overhaul of the series pulling it out of mediocrity and into relatively solid territory.

The first flick is a derivative supernatural teen slasher set in standard cliché horror movie small town amongst a set of unlikeable (and clearly too old for school) kids who unearth an ancient evil whilst playing the titular Parker Bros property. It’s a thinly veiled knock off of the Final Destination franchise but without the innovative Rube Goldberg-esque death scenes that set that series apart.

In contrast, Flanagan’s sequel sets the action back in the seventies and centres the story around a family plagued by the aforementioned ancient evil, setting the scene for a more personal and thus far scarier take on the material, unrecognizable from the original film in all the right ways.
