10 Movie Sequels That MOCKED What Fans Hated
9. X-Men: Apocalypse Mocked X-Men: The Last Stand
X-Men: Apocalypse features a memorable scene where the young mutants go to the movies to watch Return of the Jedi and consequently debate the merits of the original Star Wars trilogy.
The sequence ends with Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) offering up a knowing comment: "Well, at least we can all agree the third one is always the worst."
Given that Apocalypse was directed by original X-Men helmer Bryan Singer, it's hilariously obvious that this was something of a disgruntled nod towards the maligned third X-Men movie, The Last Stand.
Directed by Brett Ratner instead of Singer - who was making Superman Returns at the time - the threequel was generally accepted to be a major step down from the first two X-Men films, enough that Days of Future Past ended up annihilating it from the timeline entirely.
The tragic irony, of course, is that Apocalypse was itself ultimately a disappointing threequel, failing to match the quality of its predecessors First Class and Days of Future Past.
Writer Simon Kinberg, who also penned The Last Stand, at least appreciated the risk when he wrote the line, saying post-release, "[The line] was also a bit dangerous because First Class and Days of Future Past are very good films and it potentially puts Apocalypse in the crosshairs as well." Indeed.
