Ghostbusters II was largely viewed as a disappointment by fans - even if it's certainly not bad - because it was so aggressively committed to just being the same movie all over again.

Ghostbusters II kicks off with the central quartet put out of business and forced to restart the Ghostbusters from the ground-up, while dealing with a malevolent spectral force that possesses a key character in order to enact its Evil Plan.
Beyond this, the Ghostbusters have to once again deal with bureaucratic obstacles, and the climax takes place in the streets of New York City with a giant mascot brought to life - this time the Statue of Liberty rather than the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.
Overall, Ghostbusters II is an entertaining enough sequel, though rightly remains contentious due to how desperately it clings to what made the original work,
