10 Movie Sequels With The Most Shocking Drops In Quality

4. Speed 2: Cruise Control

Thor: Love and Thunder
20th Century Fox

As Keanu Reeves told Jimmy Kimmel back in 2015, his response to the offer of Speed 2 was "Urgh" as he declined the chance to return as Jack Traven. While Reeves talked about his fondness of co-star Sandra Bullock and director Jan de Bont, he rightly pointed out the fact that cruise ships aren't exactly known for their high-speed intensity.

To his credit, Keanu was absolutely correct to swerve this sequel that would be nominated for a whopping eight Golden Raspberry Awards.

Whereas Speed centred on a bus rigged to explode should its, err, speed drop below 50 mph, Speed 2: Cruise Control switches things up by focussing on a cruise ship programmed to crash into an oil tanker. And conveniently, Bullock's Annie just so happens to be aboard this cruise ship as part of a vacation with her boyfriend Alex, played by Jason Patric.

Despite having the ever-great Willem Dafoe as its villain, Speed 2 is entirely subpar to the original and ranks as one of the worst sequels of all time. Patric proves an extremely bland replacement for Keanu Reeves, the ship setting lacks the immediate high stakes of the bus dilemma, and, ironically, Speed 2 is a slow, plodding affair whose two-hour runtime feels like an eternity.
