10 Movie Soundtracks Better Than The Film

2. SuperFly

There have been plenty examples of a soundtrack that stands apart from the film. From the first time a musician appeared onscreen to the brilliant compilations people have put together over the years, dozens of films have left us with stellar music to listen to after the show's over. It may be fun to listen to these in passing, but the soundtrack to SuperFly feels like an experience unto itself.

Though the '70s marked the start of blaxploitation films, SuperFly's story was pretty decent but lacked any real staying power as a film. On the other hand, Curtis Mayfield's delicate soul struck the ideal balance of sensuality and fear that comes with living on the street. There may be clear instrumental passages sprinkled throughout, but songs like "Little Child Runnin Wild" taps into the beautiful tragedies that come with living in the city.

Even with the morose subject matter, a lot of these songs are still amazing on their own, with "Pusherman" being the catchiest song ever written about a drug dealer. Apart from just film, the entire world of hip hop has used this album as a blueprint, with everyone from Kanye West to Eminem featuring bits and pieces of this soundtrack in their songs. SuperFly might paint a pretty grim picture, but sometimes it takes music this beautiful to get your point across.
