During the trip, Charlie tells Slade about a moral dilemma he is facing. Before leaving for New York, Charlie was a witness to a prank pulled by several classmates on the school's headmaster. Aware of this, the headmaster offers to write Charlie an ironclad letter of recommendation to Harvard if Charlie 'fesses up in a hearing before the whole student body. Charlie refuses to name the perpetrators, and when it looks like he is about to face dire consequences, Slade speaks up in a profanity-filled, but sincere speech about integrity.
