5. Dr. Melivin Potts in Girl, Interrupted

Girl, Interrupted is the 1999 film adaptation of Susanna Kaysens memoir of the same name. The film is noted for Angelina Jolies amazingly sociopathic performance but our main protagonist is Susanna (Winona Ryder) who checks herself into a psych ward. This institution provides a selection of doctors to pick apart but the one that stands out for being particularly bad has to be Dr. Melvin Potts played by Jeffrey Tambor (if youve seen him in Arrested Development youre going to have a hard time taking him serious in the first place). When he promptly assesses Susanna he diagnoses her as having Borderline Personality Disorder founded on the basis that she is sexually promiscuous and has no goals in life. Of course this film is set in the 50s and now promiscuity and demotivation make for an excellent HBO television show but thats another matter. Apart from his uninformed diagnosis he is also shown to drift off during counselling sessions which is never helpful and he is rather untactful with Susannas parents telling them her disorder is most likely inherited.
