10 Movie Titles With Double Meanings Everyone Missed

It’s coming home, it’s coming home, it’s coming... Spidey’s coming home...

Spider Man Homecoming
Sony Pictures

They say don’t judge a book by its cover, but the fact is, most of us do. There simply isn’t enough time to read all the books in the world, so we use the cover as a little hint to guess if we might like it. The same goes for movie posters, and while some posters are downright horrible, most do the basic job of selling the movie.

Its not just the poster itself though. The title can be just as important for getting a movie’s foot in the door with audiences, and sometimes it’s a bit cleverer than it seems.

A lot of the time, movie titles are quite simple. Thor and Forrest Gump are just movies about men named Thor and Forrest Gump, for example. Occasionally though, their name will have one meaning on the surface, but a deeper second meaning which most people miss. Once you know them, they can make your viewing experience just a little bit better the second time around.

Either because they’re puns, symbolic or have a metaphorical meaning alongside their literal one, these movie titles all have an extra layer which a lot of people don’t realise.

10. Avengers: Endgame

Spider Man Homecoming
Marvel Studios

Despite Endgame being absolutely everywhere for the past few months, few seem to have picked up on how clever the title is. Instead, once initial coverage of the film’s plot had died down, talk shifted immediately to box office figures, chances of toppling Avatar and various controversies.

The name itself though hasn’t really been discussed. While Infinity War dealt with a war for the Infinity Stones and Age Of Ultron might have been better named Afternoon Of Ultron, Endgame is a genuinely clever title.

Endgame is the name of a certain scenario in chess, when very few pieces are left on the board and players are restricted in their options. Sound familiar?

Assuming the superheroes to be chess pieces, they literally enter the Endgame as Infinity War ends. Spidey, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch and many others are ‘taken off the board’ when Thanos dusts them, and they’re left with a skeleton crew of heroes with limited options to bring them back.
