10 Movie Titles With Double Meanings Everyone Missed
6. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Spider-Man: Homecoming isn’t as clever or as deep as some of the other ones here, but there’s definitely a lot of people who missed Marvel’s double meaning here, so it’s worth discussing.
First off, there’s the literal Homecoming dance at the apex of the Peter Parker side of the plot, which leaks into Spider-Man’s story as the Vulture turns out to be his date’s dad, and discovers his secret identity while dropping him off.
It shows how intense Michael Keaton’s acting ability is when he’s far more terrifying as Adrian Tooms than he is as the Vulture.
Homecoming is a major part of American high school and it makes sense for it to feature heavily in the movie, especially with it emphasising Peter’s youth compared to the other MCU heroes. However, it’s not the only reason for the name.
Marvel have long known that Spider-Man is their biggest hitter; he was Stan Lee’s most cherished creation and was the face of their brand around the world. Due to licensing issues though, he had to be left out of the MCU initially until a deal was worked out.
This was his Homecoming. Spider-Man back with Marvel, and all was right in the world again.
