10 Movie Trailers That Totally Trolled Audiences

7. Bicentennial Man

Bicentennial Man
Columbia Pictures

The Robin Williams-starring sci-fi drama Bicentennial Man revolves around an android (Williams) that wishes to become human.

With a stonking $100 million budget at stake, Columbia Pictures opted to dishonestly market the movie as a wacky comedy about an eccentric android rather than the oft-somber meditation on mortality that it actually is.

With its use of upbeat music, emphasis on the film's brief comedic scenes and name-dropping of "from the director of Mrs. Doubtfire", the outrageously misleading trailer set up casual audiences to be stunned when it turned out the film was a far more grounded - and depressing - experience than they had been sold.

Unsurprisingly, Bicentennial Man went on to bomb catastrophically at the box office, while Columbia presumably wondered how their sneaky tonal bait-and-switch went wrong.
