10 Movie Trilogies That Are Absolutely Perfect
2. The Lord Of The Rings
Shot over one year in New Zealand's beautiful countryside, composed of over 150 locations, a packed cast and dozens upon dozens of passionate crewmembers, Peter Jackson's Lord of the Ring's trilogy remains the pinnacle of epic fantasy moviemaking.
Based on the novels by J.R.R Tolkien, the films follow two hobbits (Elijah Wood and Sean Astin) as they travel through a war-torn Middle-earth in hopes of destroying the powerful One Ring. Along the way, they encounter the insane creature Gollum (Andy Serkis), whilst their allies fight a never-ending war throughout the land.
What makes the Lord of the Rings trilogy so great is how balanced and controlled it is. At its core, the films are about unlikely heroes tackling an unknown world, which leads to some inspired moments of character development and fantastic acting.
But beyond its more subtle details, the films are also fantasy and war epics, featuring endless battle sequences, wizards, prophecies, magical creatures and otherworldly dangers.
It's a marvellous juggling act to maintain, but one that Jackson, his cast and crew achieve without fault, to create one of the biggest and most impressive spectacles in movie history.
