10 Movie Villains Obsessed With Immortality

3. Walter Donovan - Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade (1989)

Malcom Mcdowell Burn

Plenty of tales of man's thirst for godlike power are cautionary to say the least, and selling a soul to the devil never seems to quite pan out. What's so juicy about The Last Crusade is that the villains are doing business not with the devil, but God.

Donovan wants the Holy Grail for its divine powers, and he hires Indy to find it. It doesn't take long before Donovan shows his true colors, the red, white, and black of the Nazi insignia.

The relationship of Naziism and Christianity is not necessarily a mainstream-friendly topic, but it's really no departure from the classic quest for the Grail and its vanities. This folly is ultimately illustrated in Donovan's demise, where of course he drinks from an externally alluring cup and is quickly punished.

In the end, though artifact-hunter in Indy wants to keep the Grail too, but he's forced to let it go.
