Released in 2004, Shane Meadows’ terrifying, bleak slasher Dead Man's Shoes may be the most upsetting film listed here. And that's a pretty impressive achievement when it's alongside the likes of 12 Years a Slave and 8MM.

The dark horror tells the tale of a soldier returning home to wreak bloody, brutal vengeance on the bullies who tormented his mentally disabled little brother. Spoilers abound from hereon out, so fair warning: late in the film the viewer discovers that our ostensible hero is actually avenging his brother's death, as the torture from his fake friends saw him eventually tricked into taking his own life.

And Sonny, portrayed by former model and boxer Gary Stretch, is the worst of the toxic lot.

A horrific monster, this brutal bully pushed the disabled, impressionable younger man by publicly humiliating him, manipulating him, forcing a young girl on him sexually, and eventually setting up a twisted fake hanging after drugging him. When the stunt predictably ends in death, the audience are left braying for Sonny's blood. Even an eventual bullet through the skull is an empty cold comfort after this film's brutal exploration of the human capacity for depravity.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
