The late, great Joel Schumacher had an impressive career which spanned all sorts of tonal rollercoaster-ing, from the pomp of The Phantom of the Opera to the camp of Batman and Robin. But the director's darkest film features one of the most unsettling screen villains in cinema history.

Following Nicolas Cage's troubled detective as he attempts to track down a girl apparently murdered in a snuff film, 8MM sees the actor delve deep into the twisted world of uber-rich, uncaring financiers and the twisted "artists" who do the dirty work of creating their disturbing "art".

Peter Stormare is appropriately over-the-top as the movie's snuff filmmaker, but it's his deeply unsettling henchman Machine who deserves a place on this list.

Mute for much of the film's action, this gimp-suited killer does the actual onscreen murdering and torturing in these twisted productions, and is eventually unmasked at the film's end when he's revealed to be just some average guy.

The uncaring murderer then laughs off the idea that he was motivated by anything other than having fun, noting that he's had an easy life and just enjoys wanton depravity.

Cathal Gunning hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
