The Wrong Move

After placing Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) under his Celestial influence, Ego (Kurt Russell) pointlessly informs his son that he was responsible for his mother's death, by implanting a fatal tumour in her head to ensure that he wouldn't be distracted from his quest to seed himself throughout the galaxy.

This near-immediately snaps Peter out of his trance, causing him to angrily attack Ego and, along with the Guardians, eventually kill him by blowing up his brain at the planet's core.

What They Should've Done

Clearly, there was absolutely no reward and a huge risk in Ego nonchalantly explaining that he killed Meredith (Laura Haddock), so why even bother doing it?

Granted, Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Gamora (Zoe Saldana) stumbled across Ego's collection of non-Celestial child skeletons on their own, but when you've got a powerful Celestial like Peter under your spell, that's probably not too much of an issue.

Unless you carelessly break the spell said Celestial is under, of course, which was Ego's only real mistake. And maybe not tidying up his vault of dead children when he's got guests, too.
