After being introduced separately across a handful of movies, The Avengers brought Earth's Mightiest Heroes together to fight Tom Hiddleston's Loki. The God of Mischief had attacked SHIELD with his scepter, stolen the Tesseract, and fled into the night as S.H.I.E.L.D. HQ crashed to the ground around Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).

While Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) was brought in to help locate the Tesseract, it was initially Captain America (Chris Evans) that was first sent after the Asgardian Prince. The two fought in Stuttgart, and rusty from spending 70 years as a capsicle, Steve Rogers was all over the place.

All it took for Loki to ultimately concede defeat, despite his dominant position, was a visit from Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man. However, both Rogers and Fury knew this wasn't as straightforward as it seemed. Cap knew he had given up too easily, and Fury noted that Loki was the only one who wanted to be on the Helicarrier. Getting caught was always part of his plan.

The reason was Banner. In order to kickstart the Tesseract's energy, Loki needed a power source, something that would come conveniently in the form of Banner's gamma-powered transformation into the Hulk. Ultimately, this part of Loki's plan was a success, as the Chitauri's path to Earth was opened up, something that wouldn't have been possible without his being on the inside of a S.H.I.E.L.D. cell.
