10 Movie Villains Who Were Far Less Formidable Than We Feared

7. The Symbiote/Dark Peter Parker €“ Spider-Man 3

Spider-Man 3 In a similar vein of 'dark superheroes,' I give you Peter Parker. Yes, I know he's not really the villain of the film, but his descent into badness (I can't really call it evil), for all its cringe-worthy acts, was supposed to make an important dramatic point. It's supposed to set up the malevolent powers of the symbiote and foreshadow what might eventually happen. As we all know by now, the symbiote acts as something of an amplifier for your darker side, but for Peter Parker this just makes him get a new haircut, yell at his landlord to fix things (perfectly understandable given how long his door's been broken) and flounce about in the street like a loon. Sure, he does eventually graduate into emotionally manipulating Mary Jane and starting a bar fight, but jerks do that in real life all the time, with only alcohol as a crutch. So really, the much-derided symbiote just failed to live up to any reasonable expectations, both as a dramatic device and on its own terms as a villain. In fact, the only thing I think it really did was turn Peter into a competent jazz musician. Oh sure, it finds Eddie Brock eventually and kicks the plot into something resembling action, but even then it doesn't inspire wildly malevolent evil, it just amplifies Brock's hatred for Peter until he was prepared to go completely over the top. I guess that amplification can provide a case for the symbiote being a more competent villain, until you realise that all you need to defeat the damn thing is a couple of sonorous metals.
