10 Movie Villains You Sort of Hope Will Win

5. Old Joe (Looper)

Okay, okay, Old Joe isn't technically the villain (that would be the never-seen Rainmaker) but he is the guy who Young Joe must stop and he kills little kids so what more "boo! Hiss" d'ya want? First off, it's hard to dislike Bruce Willis. It's like trying to think sad things whilst smiling - you just can't do it. Secondly, he€˜ plays the same character as Joseph Gordon-Levitt - so how can you dislike the same guy as the hero? But most of all, he's not evil - just a guy trying to prevent a catastrophe. In Willis' case, that means preventing the future rise to power of the Rainmaker - a guy who murders at will and who is running amok in the future - by killing him when he's a kid. And to top it off our support for Old Joe, the kid is shown to have a devastating temper that ends up killing people. So it's not even as if he€™s all sugar and spice; doe-eyed and helpless. No, he's a dangerous, unpredictable and uncontrolled seething mass of rage. So when Young Joe decides to protect him, we collectively roll our eyes. When he puts a supporting hand on the boy's shoulder - after seeing his murder a man and blow up a house - instead of pulling the trigger, the entire audience screams (mentally) "Are you f**king kidding me?!" And prays that Old Joe will show up and do what needs to be done.

Chiselled, charismatic, intellectual.....these are just a few words in my vocabulary. Loves watching films and believes the best thing about Christmas is watching old people slip on ice.
