2. General Francis Hummel (The Rock)
General Frank Hummel is the apparent bad guy from The Rock. Like Major Vic Deakins of Broken Arrow, he's extorting the government which means we dont care. Its not like hes threatening a little old lady. But whilst Deakins operates out of self interest, Hummel sacrifices his career, reputation and life for the greater good. He threatens to launch deadly VX gas on San Francisco unless the government pays ransom and reparations to the families of Recon Marines who died on illegal, clandestine missions under his command and whose deaths were not honoured. Whats not to admire about that? Furthermore, he is demanding that the money isnt out of the tax payers pocket or at the expense of cancer research but from money the US earned via illegal weapons sales. And as if that doesnt make us want to salute the guy to the full, he doesnt even possess the cold bloodedness to carry out his threat and calls off the imminent attack. His cause was just, his intentions honourable, and he continued to protect his country even when it meant the failure of his mission and the end of his life. The guy was a hero in battle, a hero in life, and a hero to the end.
