7. Insulted Native American Actors Walk Off The Set Of The Ridiculous Six
It's not really surprising that a movie starring Adam Sandler has drawn controversy (before it has even been released, mind you), though the accusations here aren't - as one might expect with a Sandler flick - to do with "crimes against comedy," but claims of racism. According to reports from the set of his upcoming comedy western, then, a dozen Native American actors walked off of the set after they accused the script of being offensive towards their race, culture and heritage. The film isn't out yet, so it's difficult to judge the claims fairly, but if the draft script is anything to go by, then you can understand - especially with "hilarious" comedy Native American character names such as "Sits-On-Face." Adam Sandler eventually himself spoke out about the incident:
"I talked to some of the actors on the set who were there and let them know that the intention of the movie is 100% to just make a funny movie. Its really about American Indians being good to my character and about their family and just being good people. Theres no mocking of American Indians at all in the movie. Its a pro-Indian movie. So hopefully when people see it - whoever was offended on set and walked out, I hope they realize that, and thats it. It was kinda taken out of context."
Audiences will have to wait 'til Netflix unveil the movie in December to judge whether or not it's "a racist piece of trash" or a "sensitive comic masterpiece." But you can probably guess which way the hammer will fall, because this is a motion picture starring Adam Sandler.
